Van Diemen Films has been established for 34 years in the design and manufacture of motion picture lenses using their patented Wireform™ lens drive technology. This mechanical drive system provides very smooth movements with a variable pitch driving the focus unit more quickly at close focus than at the infinity end of the focus movement providing durability in service and resilience under severe conditions of use. These lenses fully cover the Academy format but can also be used with larger frame sizes. The optical design has particularly good performance at close focus distances with resolution and contrast maintained at full aperture.

It should be noted that the Nyogel 774 range is available in 5 levels of viscosity, from the Nyogel 774VL (Very Light), through to the Nyogel 774VH (Very Heavy). Damping is a subjective matter, but most of our customers prefer the tactile feel provided by Nyogel 774VH or the slightly less viscous Nyogel 774H (Heavy)

Challenge

Cameramen need to rely on their lenses having the smoothest movement possible. Any mechanical glitch can cause extensive and expensive delays on set. The use of the correct damping grease from Nye Lubricants is crucial in maintaining these movements and avoiding any unnecessary servicing or repairs.

Nyogel 774 series damping grease

It should be noted that the Nyogel 774 range is available in 5 levels of viscosity, from the Nyogel 774VL (Very Light), through to the Nyogel 774VH (Very Heavy). Damping is a subjective matter, but most of our customers prefer the tactile feel provided by Nyogel 774VH or the slightly less viscous Nyogel 774H (Heavy).

Proposed Solution

  • A mid-viscosity grease is usually sufficient to ensure a smooth movement on the lens.
  • There must be no increase in contact resistance across the lens as a result of using a damping grease.
  • The grease should be durable and have a long functional life to protect the lens through production life.

Results

Normally only a thin coating of the Nyogel damping grease is required for the product to be effective, especially due to the sensitive application area of the product. In this case study, the damping grease is primarily being used as to reduce friction between the twist application on the camera lens; so it is important to apply controlled amounts around the application area. A result of using a controlled amount of the Nyogel damping grease vastly reduced the product friction and eased the twist of the product lens to allow proper use of the product.
